Web hosting and server administration for Rodovid.org genealogy website

Created in March 2005 to enable joint, free and open editing of family trees, the Rodovid.org genealogy portal has remained free to use for all the 20 years of its operations.

Web hosting

The primary servers of Rodovid are located at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in Ireland. The backup copies are stored on other servers in the United States.

The monthly web hosting and traffic fees vary. In July 2015, they accounted for $170, out of which $130 was to pay the fees of its primary servers, with another $40—to cover the costs of the backup copies.

Server administration

In addition to web hosting, Rodovid’s servers require daily monitoring by a system administrator to ensure smooth operation and to intervene in case of unforeseen situations, such as sudden overloads. Such services currently on average take about five hours per month, which is an equivalent to $150 per month.

Our goal

The goal of this pilot fundraising effort is to raise the equivalent of $1,600 to keep the servers running for five months, from August 1 to December 31, 2025.

Once this fundraising round is complete, we will announce new fundraising rounds for the projects we have already planned to improve the operations of the Rodovid genealogy portal.
